Thirty Seconds To Mars: 23 November 2014 – Cape Town

Music is magic. It doesn’t matter where it is brought to life, it doesn’t matter who emits the notes, it doesn’t matter if it is for one or thousands. What matters is that it is done with passion and persuasion, confidence and conviction. Because it is then and only then that one can truly experience the freedom it brings. And with it the believe that anything is possible, no dream unattainable…

Show it in 10: On top of the world

22 Oct

Table Mountain in all its splendid glory…

“Such a feelin’s comin’ over me
There is wonder in most every thing I see
Not a cloud in the sky, got the sun in my eyes
And I won’t be surprised if it’s a dream

I’m on the top of the world lookin’ down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I’ve found ever since you’ve been around
Your love’s put me at the top of the world”

Love nest

8 Oct

“You see, I’m building my missus a home. Ain’t nothing fancy, just something neat, maybe with a good view and nice neighbours. A place where we can raise a family, give the youngsters wings to fly and let them explore the big wide world. I hope she likes this.”

Say it in 10: Always been here…

7 Oct

What else can you do but think outside the box, push the boundaries, step outside the comfort zone, take a leap of faith… Because that’s where the magic happens.

In between it’s a fine balancing act, walking on a tight rope, all it takes is one false step to tumble into the abyss. Once you are on the other side though, the view is simply spectacular.

It’s hard, relentless, day in and day out, nights too. There’s no reprieve for body, mind or soul. Tired, stripped to the bone, hanging on, taking one more step. Surely the road to nowhere must end somewhere?

Then you round the corner and a gust of wind hits you between the shoulder blades and you are lifted and propelled forward and suddenly you are flying and you are thinking ‘Where did that come from?’

And then there’s a whisper from somewhere deep inside: “Pssst, always been here…”

Say it in 10: Dropped connection

29 Sep

On an electronic level, we are more connected than ever before and not a day goes by without some kind of new invention “that will take communication into the next stratosphere”, literally. However, somewhere along the line (no pun intended) we have lost the true human connection (again, no pun intended).

Case in point…

It is mid-morning on a Sunday and I’m sitting in a family restaurant, having a mocha-java with a chocolate-glazed donut on the side, waiting for my car to be washed across the road. A mother and her young son take the table next to me, their tray packed with a hamburger/fries/cold drink combo and a giant muffin and latte-something.

Apart from a “Be careful, don’t spill”, not a single word is uttered for the duration of the meal. ‘Son’ picks at the meal, if you can even call it that; ‘Mom’ only has eyes for one thing, the mobile phone that seems to be attached to her hands.

What, I ask you, could have been more important on this glorious sunny spring day that couldn’t have waited one more day? What was the I-have-to-do-it-now-it-is-a-life-and-death-situation that prevented two human beings, in this instance a parent and child, from looking each other in the eye and into the windows of the soul?

Let’s unplug and tune-in, to each other.

Right time, right place

25 Sep

It is being at the right time, at the right place.

Question is – what it the right time, where is the right place?

The quest continues…

Happy birthday, Bruce Springsteen!

23 Sep

No doubt there will be countless heartfelt messages of congratulations today, on this, the 65th anniversary of your birth.

I am saying Happy Birthday ‘over thousands and thousands of miles of shark-infested waters’ from the southern tip of Africa!

You didn’t change my life in a big and profound way. What you however undoubtedly have done, is provide the bedrock to the wanderings of body, mind and soul.

Your way with words and song has been a gift – pure, honest, truthful.

It is the shot-from-the-heart and straight-from-the-soul approach that has set you apart from the rest; you are one of a kind.

You have created a community of kindred spirits, united in our admiration, respect and gratitude for true artistry. Fans like us were born to follow because ‘there’s magic in the night’.

You’ve said it and yes, it’s only rock and roll, but it sure feels like love.

Happy Birthday, Bruce!
