Springsteen Snapshots: 1

29 Aug

It is no secret that I derive nourishment in abundance from being a doting Bruce Springsteen devotee.

He’s magical musical making abilities have given life to countless characters and their stories, their sadness and hardships, their hopes and dreams. They have inhabited my life, sometimes prominent and at other times slow-dancing in the background, but always a presence.

This has led to the creation of SPRINGSTEEN SNAPSHOTS. Combining The Boss’s ingenious way with words with images from my earthly wanderings, I am bringing together two different, but allied worlds.

Therefore, and in no particular order, the first batch…

Who’ll come knockin’ tonight?

28 Aug

The night before last it was the four sisters and a dancing Yankee girl

The night before them it was Marvin Gaye and a geisha in a white kimono

I wonder who’ll come knockin’ tonight

Because the cover of darkness isn’t always relief from the harshness of day

It’s the playground of angels and demons alike

And then nobody came last night

Maybe they were just too scared, or scarred

Or maybe it was just too crowded

By lost souls, not seen or heard, but felt

It was a bit of a strange one in the wee hours of this morning

A dream catcher slapped me between the shoulder blades

The trinkets made a noise

Whispering “someone’s coming”

Guess whose back

I wonder who’ll come knockin’ tonight

Say it in 10: Ignorance is bliss, or…

26 Aug

You can’t miss it, the big blue letters adorning the stark white walls – NYPD.

Therefore, please read and hear with the appropriate local inflection:

“What does NYPD stand for?”

Waiting to enter the hallowed ground where the twin towers of the World Trade Centre used to throw their shadows over Lower Manhattan, I at first thought my ears were deceiving me. But then this (again, read and hear with the unmistakeable twang):

“Silly, you live here, you should know”; “No really, what does it stand for?”

I surreptitiously glanced sideways and all I could subscribe it to was youthful ignorance.

Maybe it should be forgiven. But forgotten? I’m not so sure.

Show it in 10: Garden Party

25 Aug

It was a delightful mid-morning garden party by a bunch of absolutely exuberant white-backed mousebirds. The guests were a bit picky though, I must add, with variety high on the pecking order. However, they did indicate they’ll be back. I’m waiting…

Ringmaster

22 Aug

These are my monkeys

This is my circus

You are the ringmaster

Of this freak show of blame

Strung up on the high wire

No safety net

The lion’s mouth a gaping hole

Into an abyss of “I don’t know”

The human cannonball

Is no match for the strong man

The dwarf is standing tall

Searching for the monster’s third eye

Swallowing swords

Spewing flames

Clowns and jugglers

Popcorn and candy

These are my monkeys

This is my circus

You are the ringmaster

Of this freak show of blame

Say it in 10: Springsteen Snapshots

20 Aug

I wrangle with words and string sentences together. Sometimes it’s pure pleasure, but occasionally a hands-in-hair, teeth-clenched affair.

The same goes for when I have a camera in hand, exploring foreign shores.

It is what feeds my inspired and imaginative mind however, and I wouldn’t want to deny the beast its bounty, would I?

It is also no secret that I derive nourishment in abundance from being a doting Bruce Springsteen devotee.

Sweet 16: Outside my window

19 Aug

It sure is nice, but you don’t need to fill your passport with cross border insignia or venture to foreign shores to see the world on the other side. In fact, you don’t need to travel far at all. Take a look what I discovered right outside my window…
